  Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907 My father Harold William wrote the following notes at the end of his transcript: The above extracted from the Diary and the following notes added by Harold W. Sendall, on 24th May 1971 Verbattim extracts from the Diary are in quotation marks. Bracketed notes marked * are added comments by Harold W. Sendall. ( now in italic in this blog) My father, Edward William Sendall was married twice. The first to Ann [My note: Not Ann - Mary Elizabeth ] Hind and they had the following children (apart from any who may have died at birth or in early infancy). Clara, Mary Ann (who have died), Thomas Henry (retired minister of the United Church of Canada now living in Victoria B.C. (no sons) so no other Sendalls there, Alice Hind and Amelia Ann Wilson (widow) who both live in Lincoln and are in their eighties. Edward William Born 19th February 1858 (my father) Robert Henry - 9th December 1860 Died 13th December 1863 Frederick Richard - 31st [sic] April 1862 Died when 3 years of age Maria Ann - 15th March 1866 Amelia Ann - in 1864 died at 3 years of age Arthur Richard - 12th June 1868 (one son, Edgar, still living in Lincoln) George Robert - 7th September 1870 (some sons whereabouts unknown) Herbert John - 9th October 1873 (settled in Liverpool, no sons) Alfred Henry - 3rd February 1876 (settled in rugby, family not known to me) Edgar Charles - 6th May 1881 (settled in Lincoln, son still there William Sendall)

  Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907 Norfolk holiday "August 1878 went to Lynn, Dereham, Hockering, Yarmouth and Hunstanton for my Holidays was away from home twelve days. February 1879 applied for an increase in salary and got an increase of 20 Pounds per annum. September 1879 Got my salary as Enquiry Officer raised from Five pounds per annum to Ten Pounds. August 1880 Me and Maria went to Lynn, East Dereham, Hockering and Hunstanton, enjoyed it very much... 6th May 1881 Epitaph on a Blacksmith in Hockering Churchyard Norfolk. 'Sacred to the Memory of Henry Huggins Blacksmith who dies April 10th 1844 aged 81 years. My Sledge and hammer be reclined, My Bellows to have lost their wind, My fires extinct my Forge decayed, My vice within the dust is laid, My coals are spent my Irons gone My Nails are drove my work is done'".   Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907 Lincoln 7th February 1857 left and went to Lincoln. "On 9th of February I started work for a Mr Hind who afterwards died at Christchurch New Zealand. My first job with him was Mr. Clayton's Regalia Stand, he was Mayor that year. Made Ann's acquaintance on the 14th February in the High Street it was Sunday evening"  My father added: Presumably this is the person he eventually married as his marriage is recorded later and he did marry a Hind . My note: So did his son Edward William apparently according to my father Harold William below. London and marriage.    Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907 From 1846 to 1856 (15 years old to 24 years old) Edward travelled for work. He did a variety of jobs and finally trained as a wood carver. In 1857 he arrived in Lincoln where he settled. He died in Linclon, my grandfather was born in London and died in Lincoln. My father was born in Lincoln. 1846 - Waiter "In the Autumn of 1846 I got myself a situation as under Waiter at a large Temperance Hotel and Eating House in the Market Place Norwich it was kept by a man by the name of A. Seeley. I had charge of one room on Market Days I have had as many as 200 diners to serve. I stopped there until April 1847 and then went home to Hockering." 1847 - Page boy at Physicians "I did not stop long at home. I got up early one morning in May and walked to Lynn (there were no trains then) so I had a long walk for one day 33 miles.  Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907 Norfolk and Norwich Hospital "The Saturday before Christmas 1843 I went into the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital and stayed there 20 weeks. I was a patient of a celebrated Dr by the name of Lubbock  I was in the Accident and Operating Ward, there were some very bad cases came in as the Eastern Counties Railway from Norwich to London was being made at that time, but the worst cases were 1st a man who worked for Mr Coleman the Mustard Manufacturers he placed a gun in hedge on half lock and when pulling it towards him it went off and content lodged in his chest when the Surgeon out the shot his heart could be seen but in six weeks he went out cured. The 2nd case was from a village by the name of Hettersett the man had cut all round a tree and then went to the top of the tree to fasten a rope to it to pull it down the natural result was the tree and man came down together his jaw was broke in two places his tongue was cut clean thr...
