Diary Extract - Lincoln, Holidays (Norfolk, Liverpool) - 1877-1885

 

Extracts from the dairy of Edward Sendall 1831-1907

Norfolk holiday

"August 1878 went to Lynn, Dereham, Hockering, Yarmouth and Hunstanton for my Holidays was away from home twelve days. February 1879 applied for an increase in salary and got an increase of 20 Pounds per annum. September 1879 Got my salary as Enquiry Officer raised from Five pounds per annum to Ten Pounds. August 1880 Me and Maria went to Lynn, East Dereham, Hockering and Hunstanton, enjoyed it very much... 6th May 1881 Epitaph on a Blacksmith in Hockering Churchyard Norfolk. 'Sacred to the Memory of Henry Huggins Blacksmith who dies April 10th 1844 aged 81 years. My Sledge and hammer be reclined, My Bellows to have lost their wind, My fires extinct my Forge decayed, My vice within the dust is laid, My coals are spent my Irons gone My Nails are drove my work is done'".

Liverpool and Chester holiday

August 1882 Went to Liverpool and too the Steamer to the Eastham Ferry then took train to Chester and met with some Cousins I had not seen for 26 years. Their names were Lovett their mother and my mother were sisters, they are Catholics the oldest Selina was married to a printer by the name of Jones they lived in Gladstone Avenue, Sealand Road, Chester. Eleanor was a governess in a Catholic family at Preston Lancashire, Frank was organist at St Werbergh Catholic Church, Preston, William was head clerk at Messers Rylatt and Procters, Artificial Manure Merchants, Chester, Susannah's husband is a Cabinet Maker and live in London and have seven children, George is a Printer and lives at Manchester."

Promotion and Presiding at an Election

September 1884 Salary raised as the Enquiry to the Board of Guardians from £10 to £15 per annum, July 1885 Presided at Owston Polling Station at the North Lincolnshire Election. The Candidates were Sir Mersey Thompson Liberal and Mr Atkinson Conservative. Fees £3. 3s Conveyance of Box £1. 6s Travelling Expenses 18s Mileage from Brigg to Lincoln £1. 4s -- £6. 11s Could do with a job like this once a week."

Final note about the diary by my father: Following the above there are references to travels, impressions of places and churches, but no other references to Norfolk or to family affairs.
